my dad and i took the 3 hr. circleline boat tour which circumnavigates the island of manhattan--pretty cool! we learned about the feud that fueled the sky-scraping ambitions of the empire state building versus the chrysler building and much, much more.

Governors Island Dutch Festival

These butterfly or dragonfly-looking art installations called Wind Nomads were spread out over a vast open field on Governors Island. There were actual dragonflies hovering over the pieces, I'm guessing, sort of confused.

We took the ferry on Saturday from the riverfront under the Brooklyn Bridge to Governors Island for the Dutch New Island Festival. The festival is put on by all Dutch artists. There were a bunch of different site-specific art installations (Wind Nomads), performance art pieces and music and comedy routines (Mr. Jones and Fred, his little (stuffed) stunt pig, was Rob's favorite act).

Paige and Nanook by the sea. Since there were no dogs allowed, as well as a ridiculously pricey admission into the light house, we just enjoyed scaling the rocks around the base.

The Montauk Point light house is apparently the 3rd oldest light house in the nation. There is no fabled light house keeper anymore; it is presently maintained by the Coast Guard--not very romantic.

So, after the grueling immigration process, folks got train tickets to all over. There was one crazy story about a couple of mail order brides getting their tickets mixed up, one mistakenly going to Cincinnati, the other to Memphis or Mississippi, or somewhere, and all parties, of course, very upset. It turned out that a conductor in New Jersey was to blame for the mix up--yikes, to say the least!

It seems so unbelievable what people went through for the pursuit of any sort of freedom, opportunity and happiness. The stories are all at once inspiring and humbling.

Rob and I just ran a 5k for Harlem Health this past weekend. This was not actually race day. I was just going to pick up our numbers, though, and happened upon the APOLLO Theater! Race day was rainy, hot and humid. I realized at the 2 mile mark of the race that, once upon a time, I would have been finished. I'm okay with my 10 min. mile now, though. I can observe my surroundings a lot better.
Rob, some friends and I gallivanted about the Lower East Side a couple of weekends ago sampling all of the tasty treats we could stomach in one afternoon. Here we are at Economy Candy---oooooh, the candy!
I was able to purchase a half pound sampler bag of tootsie rolls, multi-colored taffy, those caramel candies with the creamy center, and my fave, Mary Janes.

I found pickled okra!
I'd heard great things about the Doughnut Plant and finally we made it. We each got a different doughnut (pbj, banana pecan and coconut glaze) and had a taste of each. Coconut glaze was my personal favorite--ultra gooey! Apparently, they just stay open 'til they sell out, which appeared could have happened a lot sooner than expected.

Mom, here is the beach at Coney Island, which does not actually seem that crowded, but I realize that is because it is Coney Island and there are a gazillion other places for the masses to be besides the beach, like riding rides, rollerskating, visiting the aquarium, drinking beer, singing karaoke, standing in line for a Nathan's hot dog, viewing a freak or burlesque show, and on and on...this picture is not an accurate depiction of the Coney Island congestion. Surprisingly, though, it is not unpleasant to go there; it never ceases to amaze somehow.
Union Square: where people gather to do what? I don't know, everything and nothing. There's the Empire State Bldg in the top left hand corner. Also, the Farmers Market is there to the left below the trees.

My friend Abbey and I walked and spent the day in Red Hook, Brooklyn this past Sunday. Red Hook is probably my most favorite neighborhood in Brooklyn, because it boasts a seemingly endless array of gardens, as well as random oddities. It is also right by the water, which, even though Brooklyn is surrounded by water, one tends to forget, because it is not so accessible. Red Hook, for that matter, is not so accessible, but on a nice day, it is a relatively pleasant walk. One of our favorite coffee/pastry shops, called Baked, is another mouth-watering RH draw. I just bought the recipe book and Rob and my housemates are now reaping the tasty benefits:p

This is the Castle which is now a hotel where the Queen stays, as well as lots of other people with exorbitant amounts of money. All the other people are just hanging around the grounds taking pictures and pretending that they're staying there too.
There was a cable car service up to that bridge, but we opted to climb the forever steps to get there!

Cirque du Soleil put on a free show under a highway overpass in Quebec City! We learned that the founder of CdS was once a poor street performer from Montreal. Now he is a gazillionaire putting on amazing two-hour FREE shows for the public in QC--okay by me:)

whiskey, wine and dairy tour

Our first stop was a very modest little whiskey distillery.

Another humble tasting venue (tastings between lawn mowings? All in a days work.) Nonetheless, highly informative and palatable!

A simple cure for the post wine tasting munchies is an old school dairy counter that serves up burgers and fries, cheesecake dipped in chocolate and frozen on a stick and my personal fave, the arctic swirl with a generous amount of m&ms:P

The Travis-Childs, Sales-Bartenschlager, Arrasmith and Childs-Hawkinson families got together and had a most relaxing time in upstate New York this past weekend. Menu 'o fun included: Yard gaming (badminton anyone?), kayaking the Wallkill River, pool, eating, drinking and more eating of some amazingly tasty fare (compliments of our iron chef, Jeremy), wine and whiskey trail venturing, and, of course, charades.

Mom and I took a trip down to Milledgeville, GA (the former state capitol up until 1864) to visit Andalusia Farm where Flannery O'Connor lived.
Mom, Granny, Katie and I went to see A Chorus Line at the Fox Theatre for our ladies night out.

Olivia being very contemplative, as well as overwhelmed with the amount of pinecones on the ground that she would like to pick up, but just can't.

Dad, Katie, Olivia and I enjoyed a lovely day out on Lake Lanier. Katie and i reminisced and pondered over all the really good, as well as peculiar circumstances of life...

So Rob and I met up with my parents and Katie, Todd and Olivia for a Thanksgiving celebration Asheville style. We feasted in the grand ballroom of the Grove Park Inn and then went for a nice walk around the grounds. We also visited the house that my Grandmother Josephine once lived in. The time went by too quickly, but thank goodness Christmas in Illinois is just around the corner! Rob and I liked Asheville, for sure. The nature, art and beer selections are all pretty winning...we shall see...

Rob and I went down to North Carolina for Thanksgiving. We spent three quiet and peaceful days at the Travis family's mountain cabin before we headed to Asheville to celebrate the holiday with Mom, Dad, Katie, Todd and Olivia.

Rob and I just got back from a really wonderful and relaxing trip to Oregon. Rob's parents took very good care of us, as they let us lounge on their comfy couches and prepared nutritious and delicious meals. We went to Sauvie Island to pick pumpkins with Kate Mills, Erin, Ben, Katy and Jule. I haven't been pumpkin picking in a long time...it was difficult to choose and apparently easier to practice pumpkin balancing on one's head. We went on a lot of hikes. Our first hike: Angel's Rest in the gorge on a very windy day. The pictures are true to color. The leaves on the trees were absolutely golden. The sunshiney-ness of the landscape made for a fun contrast with Rob's hiking attire. He looked like some sort of blue Elvis super-hero. Our second hike: Cape Falcon on the coast in Oswald State Park on a very overcast day. This hike took us to a pretty amazing view, as indicated in the pictures. Also, we stopped off in Hug Point and took some pensive photos by the sea. Rob, his dad and I went for an overnight camping trip near Mt. Hood and hiked a trail called Top Spur towards Ramona Falls. My camera died pretty much just after I took that lovely picture of Mt. Hood on a happy day. The next day there were very dark, menacing clouds swirling above the mountain...it was a grumpy day, hence, we did not find Ramona Falls. We had a nice hike, nonetheless. Overall, we were able to see lots of friends and visit with family, eat and drink lots of goodness and play in nature from mountains to coast. We love Oregon!

Day of Dia: Beacon

Rob and I took the Metro North up the Hudson River on Monday to visit Dia: Beacon. This beautifulness is just a couple hours north of the city. Some of the artists exhibited: Richard Serra, Sol Lewitt, Michael Heizer and Andy Warhol. There was, unfortunately, an overly large display of canvases and paper,seemingly, with just gesso. I have yet to figure this ridiculous phenomenon out.

A Walk in the Woods, or rather, Greenwood Cemetary

Saturday was the most lovely, fall-esque day in Brooklyn. Rob and I went on a long walk through Greenwood Cemetary with Patrick, Mina, Markus, Adina and baby, Yana. We saw Samuel Morse's grave, the inventor of the telegraph and morse code. We also walked through a giant, modern mausoleum, complete with a quiet waterfall, couches, a computer directory and an elevator. We're pretty sure it is mafia related.

P.S. 1 in Long Island--Refresh Your World!

During a visit to P.S. 1 in Long Island, a museum that is affiliated with the Museum of Modern Art and which is housed in an old public school, hence the P.S., we discovered ...chickens! There was also a huge urban-garden sculpture that sorta looked like a giant lego/tinker toy with flowers and grass and weeds and a stream of water with a solitary plastic fork floating upon its still, reflective surface.

New York University, the West Village (and a movie set!), dinner at OTTO, one of Mario Batalli's restaurants, SPAM-a-lot on Broadway, Rob's work (always an interesting time), Bryant Park, the Late Show and Hello Deli, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim for the opening reception of "A Year with Children", the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the elements (rain, wind, soggy shoes and destroyed umbrellas), finally dinner and margaritas at a quaint Cuban Bistro in the 'hood to cap the last day and all the good times.

Jule Schultz came to New York City to visit Katie Scheehan and myself. Jule, a sea captain for the washington state department of health clam monitoring department (yes it is true) and our team of Jule Schultz fans, took the fine young gentleman to the 72 flavors of Tapioca Resturant, beer tasting, coffee shop hoping, coconut eating and on a fine eating voyage. Olympics for Hipsters: The Indy 500 It’s Not

Nobody was supposed to show up for the Idiotarod, the annual absurdist shopping cart race, until 1 p.m. last Saturday. The race’s starting point was a closely guarded secret until the day before, and the Carts of Brooklyn Racing Association, its sponsor, had urged people gathering for the 1:30 start time to keep a low profile.

At 12:45, though, spectators were already milling around the starting point, at the entrance to McCarren Park on Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, and they had company: uniformed police officers at every gate, officers in unmarked cars quietly circling, and even officers mounting horses on the other side of the park. Minutes later, the squad cars converged on the park, and then a helicopter appeared overhead and the officers started saying the race was canceled.

But too many shopping carts had been customized and too many costumes assembled for the hundreds of participants to go home quietly. In what was either an act of canny improvisation or the endgame of a planned ruse, race organizers led the whole motley assemblage 15 blocks northward to the “real” starting line, on Commercial Street at the edge of Greenpoint.

The police were there, too, helicopter and all, but officers put out the word that if racers behaved as pedestrians and didn’t block the streets, they would be left alone.

Meanwhile, the five-member teams kept arriving: one team dressed as the Village People, another as five versions of the 1980s Domino’s Pizza mascot, the Noid. One team wore ugly sweaters and Bill Cosby masks; another group was dressed as librarians and pushed a cart full of books. The eventual winner was a team called Colonel Angus.

As some teenagers who had gathered on a stoop on Franklin Street took a long look at an all-female team in short shorts and fishnet stockings, Mary Skinner, an actor and chef who lives upstairs, leaned out her window to check out the commotion.

“The police flying overhead, I can’t hear my movie,” she said with a shrug. “We moved here for quiet. But the neighborhood is changing quite a bit.”

The Idiotarod organizers encourage racers to sabotage their opponents, and up the street, a 25-year-old teacher named Garland English was circulating with a hand-lettered sign that read, “Official Starting Point Relocated to Park Slope.”

Mr. English denied having any malicious intent. “I don’t want people to miss out on the information,” he said. “It’s important that we all start fair and square at the same point. In Park Slope.”

As the race started and racers headed off on a course that eventually would lead them over the Pulaski Bridge into Long Island City, a man named Gilbert Ortega, who had wandered into the midst of it all, stood watching with a huge smile.

“I came to visit my brother,” he said. “I didn’t know what was happening. I thought it was Halloween or something.”

Matisyahu is the reggae-fueled Hasidic musician known as Matisyahu (born Matthew Miller) scored a surprise success last year with his second album, the concert disc Live At Stubb's. He's maintained momentum with his latest record, Youth, a Bill Laswell-produced collection of high-energy, textured dance-pop. Went to go see the "Glitter and Doom: German Portraits from the 1920s" at the Met on Saturday

Political, economic, and social turmoil shaped Germany’s short-lived Weimar Republic (1919–1933). These pivotal years also witnessed an incredibly creative period in German literature, art, music, film, theater, and architecture. In painting, a trend of matter-of-fact realism took hold. Disillusioned by the cataclysm of World War I, the most vital German artists moved towards what became known as a Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), in particular, a branch known as Verism. Looking soberly, cynically, and even ferociously at their fellow citizens, these artists found their true métier in portraiture, as seen in the 40 paintings and 60 works on paper featured in “Glitter and Doom.”

The exhibition features gripping portraits by ten renowned artists: Max Beckmann, Heinrich Maria Davringhausen, Otto Dix, George Grosz, Karl Hubbuch, Ludwig Meidner, Christian Schad, Rudolf Schlichter, Georg Scholz, and Gert H. Wollheim. German museum collections in Berlin, Cologne, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt am Main, Mannheim, Münich, Stuttgart, and Wuppertal have lent works to the exhibition. Additional portraits on loan from museums in Paris, Madrid, New York, and Toronto, as well as from private collections in Germany, Australia, New York, and Chicago, are included.

High Fidelity and Sister Katie

Last weekend Paige and Rob went and saw the musical high fidelity. The musical was suprizingly good, despite what the critics with the AM New York and the Times stated. Paige got the free tickets through her tutoring job and we were both very glad we went. The person playing Jack Black's charactor was also a bit of a scene stealer in a very positive way.
Also, Katie (paige's sister) is in town. Last night we went to see the tree at Rockefeller Center and went out to dinner in the West Village after a long day of making arts and crafts at the Travis-Childs household.

3 random New York Moments today
#1 Its morning rush hour, I walk onto a traincar at Union Square and wonder, why is this train car empty?
Well its simple. A homeless gentleman responding to internal stimulous and obviously schizophrenic is standing on the middle of the train without pants on. Just chillin. He obviously is too mentally ill to notice. I sit on the train chillin and get off at my stop on 35th street.

I get off the train on 35th street and I see this NYC businessman bending down to pick up a 20 dollar bill. Which suddenly, shazam moves a couple feet. The businesman goes after it, until he hears a woof of laughting by a random homless man with a fishing rod that has the 20 dollar bill attached to it as bait who yells "I love fishing for the white man!"

About to get on train, but a man in a purple jump suit comes running down the isle yelling, "Listen up ladies, cover your bussums, you are leading the downfall of man!"
